Hotel History

Since 1907
Since 1907

The origins of Hostal Empúries date back to 1907, when the first building, named Villa Teresita, was constructed
to provide accommodation for the first archaeologists who, under the direction of Puig i Cadafalch, began the
excavation and restoration of the remains of the Greco-Roman archaeological site of Empúries.

Since then, the Hostal has become a landmark and a pioneer of tourism in the area, even before the region
became known as the Costa Brava.

Archaeological excavations at Empúries are still ongoing today. The ruins are located just 300 metres from the
Hostal and represent a heritage site of immeasurable value, bearing witness to the coexistence of Greek and
Roman cultures.

Their origins date back to the 5th century BC, when the Greeks moved Emporion from Sant Martí d’Empúries to
the current location of the archaeological site. Emporion rapidly became one of the most important trading
ports in the Mediterranean.

During the Second Punic War, in the 3rd century BC, Emporion became part of the Roman Empire and changed
its name to Emporiae. This marked the beginning of the Romanisation of the Iberian Peninsula.

To entertain its inhabitants, an amphitheatre and a gymnasium were built, together with shops and taverns
grouped around the forum.

In the 3rd century AD, Empúries lost its importance and the city was eventually abandoned. During the 17th
century, L’Escala grew in importance, and many Greek and Roman stones from Emporion / Emporiae were
reused as building materials.

In addition to enjoying the natural beauty of the surroundings, visitors can explore the walls, houses, temples,
baths, forum, amphitheatre and markets, offering a fascinating experience of extraordinary historical value.
